“Discover How ‘The Magic of Reading’ Can Get Your Students Fired-up About Reading”
(…and be sure to read about the terrific bonus if you schedule a performance by September 25th!)
Dear Children’s Educator:
My high-energy “The Magic of Reading” Assembly Program explores the wonderful world of reading and the magic found in books.
Last year’s tour of my “The Magic of Reading” show went to over 80 schools and libraries throughout central New York, and many presenters reported it was one of the best programs they’d ever had. (Be sure to read their enthusiastic comments at the end of this letter.)
Fast paced, riveting, and extremely entertaining.
I would definitely recommend ‘The Magic of Reading’ to any school.
Mary Kelly
Bradford Central School
The entire 45 minute show is focused on reading and using the library. For instance, at the beginning of the show, the children learn that my live white rabbit, Myron, is off at your local public library applying for a library card. At the end of the show, a child produces Myron from my top hat and Myron is holding a library card from your public library! See how easy itis to get your own library card?!
The investment for a single 45-minute performance of “The Magic of Reading” is $375 (for up to 250 students), but…
HERE’S HOW YOU CAN SAVE MORE:
The investment is $375 for one assembly of up to 250 students and, if you choose to split up the grade levels (most schools do), the second program is only $225. You save $150.00 by having two programs.
The show is appropriate for grades K-6, and most schools split up the grades, kindergarten through second grade and third through sixth grades
Outstanding! Everyone I spoke with loved it and asked if we could have you back again next year. You will definitely be hearing from us again.

So what exactly do I do that gets students so fired up about books?
Here’s a sampling of the routines I draw from when I create a custom show for your school:
- One of your students holds up a simple red silk as all of the audience members concentrate on their favorite library book. Suddenly the silk transforms into a 20-foot long chain of multicolored silks, representing the incredible variety of books in your school library. Your school library really does have a book for everyone!
- I perform the Chinese Linking Rings. The students ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ as the rings form shapes representing their favorite characters from literature.
- A child from the audience laughs himself silly as the two of us make a ‘Ted Giesel Balloon Crown’. Along the way, we learn why Ted Giesel (aka Dr.Suess) is the most celebrated of children’s authors.
- A child thinks of their favorite library book and the name of that book mysteriously appears in the most unlikely place!
- The children shriek (and shriek with laughter) at the story of three bookworms who live at your local public library. (Public librarians regularly report to me that schoolchildren visit their library and ask to be shown where the bookworms live!)
BEFORE YOU BOOK ANY READING ASSEMBLY,
ASK THE PERFORMER THESE QUESTIONS:
“Is the show customized to our school’s reading program?”
“The Magic of Reading” is. If you’re bringing in the show to promote a specific reading program, I’ll make a point to learn about it when we schedule the assembly. And then I’ll make sure all your students know about your program’s theme, goals, and prizes. I seamlessly weave this information into the show.
“Will children learn specifics about our local public library?”
With my show, they’ll become experts. They’ll learn the name of their local children’s librarian (and how she/he likes to be addressed), the hours they’re open after school, special activities they’re offering, and how old a child needs to be to get a library card. (I have all this information because I phone your local public library the week before the show and find it out.)
“Will the show incorporate books from our school’s library?”
Yes, and after performances of ‘The Magic of Reading’, librarians tell me the books I’ve promoted disappear from their shelves!
“Does the show come well-recommended by public librarians?”
This past summer I performed at 60 New York State libraries, without doing a lick of publicity. The shows were booked entirely by word of mouth. Read the librarians’ effusive testimonials at the end of this letter, and you’ll see why they’re eager to book the show.
“Does the performer sincerely believe in the reading message he promotes?”
I do. I grew up in a small town in Upstate New York, and – as I tell the students — some of my happiest memories are of time spent at my local library, the Elma Public Library. I started learning magic from library books when I was in elementary school, and today my two daughters, 6 and 9 years old, have their own library cards and are ‘book monsters’ — they devour books!
What do you need to provide?
Very little: An empty space, a table, some library books, and lots of kids. That’s it. No microphone, lights, or electric outlets. I bring everything I need, so there is nothing you have to do and nothing you have to worry about. It’s easy.
100% Money Back Guarantee…
If you’re not completely satisfied, just tell me and you won’t owe me a penny.
Out of the hundreds of programs I’ve done, no one has ever, ever requested their money back. But I do give you this guarantee so that you can feel completely confident with your decision to go ahead with this.
Please be sure to read what educators and librarians have to say about this program. Their comments are at the end of this letter.
When you decide to book the “The Magic of Reading”, I’ll send you a letter of confirmation that has all the details. I’ll also give you a call a few days before the show so you can rest assured I’ll be there and be on time.
“Teachers…said it was one of the best programs we have had. David had the attention of the students and kept even kindergarteners paying attention for 50 minutes sitting on a cold floor. The students are still asking for magic books three weeks after the program.

An excellent tie in to our reading program. I loved it, and many teachers said it was one of the best assembly programs ever.

I loved the show! Your program was the best we’ve ever had at delivering a positive message about reading.
Mary Allen, Reading Teacher
Whitney Point Intermediate Unit
Terrific! High energy and engaging. The kids loved it, and I even saw the teachers laughing and getting into the fun.
Mary Beth Poupart, Library Teacher
Red Jacket Elem
How do you get a group of kindergarteners to stay seated and focused for more than an hour? Hire David Moreland. The interaction with the students was phenomenal and control over the audience was exceptional.
Elaine J. Reed, Teacher
Unadilla Elem. School
The staff loved the show, the kids loved the show, the parents loved the show. Our largest crowd for the summer. Very exciting, funny, professional, and even theatrical. The kids especially seemed to love the audience participation. I particularly liked the fact that…you encouraged the kids to visit the library and READ!
Janet Ackerman, Branch Manager
Big Flats Branch of the Steele Memorial Library
Our patrons raved! The adults and children were completely mesmerized. Moreland was incredible with control of the audience…the largest we’ve had! I loved the show!
Ahnece Teeter, Youth Services
West Elmira Branch of the Steele Mem. Library
We were delighted with both the show and the turnout! Many parents commented to us about how much they and their children enjoyed it. You may definitely use us as a reference. Thanks for kicking off our summer programs in a big way!
Karen Denney
Library Assistant
Livonia Public Library
The kids and adults loved it! The show was great…because the magic was balanced…with lively interactions with the kids and encouragement about reading at the library. This is the first time a performer has thought to mention the names of the librarians and specifically encourage the kids to go up to (our children’s area) after the show.
Diana Cramer
Children’s Librarian
Central Library, Onondaga County
Excellent show. His performance is one of the best I’ve seen. David Moreland has a great rapport with the children and just captivated them with his tricks. We had a much bigger crowd than usual but David knew how to deal with the chaos and soon had the audience enthralled.
Carrie Guarria
Children’s Librarian
Guernsey Memorial Library
By far…the most enjoyable children’s program…in the 8 years that I’ve been director. We had almost 2 times the number of attendees as with any program we’ve had! Kids and even some parents stopped me on the street to comment on how much they enjoyed the program – all of it! The info about the importance of getting a library card and the ‘magic’ found in reading was great! I have already been ‘singing your praises’ at meetings with other libraries!
Joan Tavernier, Director
Wide Awake Club Library
It was a large crowd for us and everyone really enjoyed the show. Very interactive and energetic (we love that!)
Kathy Smith, Branch Head
Mumford Branch Library
Absolutely wonderful! One of the top performances we have had in several years. We had a great turnout — about double the…usual for this type of event. The adults enjoyed it as much as the children. I was especially pleased with your efforts to personalize the performance by frequent use of the library name, staff names, and (by) promoting reading.
Laurie Newell
Library Manager
Bloomfield Public Library
One of the top 5 programs we have ever had. Kids loved it as did parents. A lot of laughter and the children loved the audience-participation. It was the largest audience in last five years. Parents wanted to know if we could schedule you for next year!
Karen Deutsch, Library Director
Livonia Public Library
What a great performance! I thoroughly enjoyed it and the children had a rollicking good time!

…Outstanding. In my 18 years with the library your act has got to be one of the best I have seen.
Kathy Morris

It is imperative to book Moreland the Magician! It was definitely the best program (our library) had all summer. The kids loved the interaction. The(camp)leader who brought the kids in asked if we could have Moreland back next year.
Amanda Cawley
Northeast Community Center Library, Syracuse
Very energetic and engaging. The best (show) we had this year (and) the largest attendance of the summer. I would highly recommend your show.
Teresa Streb

I’ve never had a magic show that tied in the reading theme so well. (Our patrons) loved it; parents as much as kids.
Cara Burton
Director
Solvay Public Library
Absolutely fabulous! I loved the way you wove in the theme, specific books, reading, visiting the library, etc. into the fun. The interaction with the audience kept the children and adults riveted. I would highly recommend this show to any public or school librarian. Their children would love it.
Joanne Trask

Wonderful! Well worth the money. I personally laughed almost the entire show.
Sue McConnell
Outreach Coordinator
Southeast Steuben County Library
One of the best shows we’ve had. I’d highly recommend it. The show drew a great crowd — the most for any program this summer. We had a couple kids get cards that night and a couple signed up for summer reading club (and)kids were still coming in 2 days later looking for books about magic.
Holly Hart
Onondaga Free Library
You rock! The show was excellent, as always. We love how David includes the audience, both young and old. The show absolutely gets the kids excited about reading, about our theme for the summer reading program, about getting their own library cards, about pretty much everything Moreland talks to them about. Mumford loves Moreland!!

Fantastic… better than last year. It was a largest audience size this summer. Many children checked out the books we placed on display which … is uncommon at (our library). And many families lingered in the library after the show. Kathy Wickham

As usual … superb. Hire him, you won’t be disappointed.
Pam Heller

Fabulous. You do keep getting better and better, and I always recommend you. You are one of the few performers we had that really hones in on the fun of reading and libraries. You are very organized and thorough (and) make it so easy on our end.
Sue Ayers
Director
Clyde-Savannah Public Lib
I was wondering if everything would be the same as last year. You surprised me! You came in with a completely different show and even the magic tricks you showed the kids at the end were different. Your show changes as the summer reading theme changes so it’s fresh every time!
Michelle Forward,
Library Manager
Morrisville Public Library
I really like … that you (emphasize) reading and books we have in the library. Books on display are always checked out after your programs.

Marvelous! We had David last year and this year was equally as good. We have, and will continue to recommend David.

A laughing good time. Parents say this was the best performance ever. (They) love how David interacts with the children. He promotes library events, handles the children very well and has the funniest jokes. We hope to have David Moreland back to visit Geneva Public Library, again, again and again!
Tanya Thompson
Geneva Free Library
You exceeded my expectation. To others I would say, “Hire that guy!” Kids have a short attention span (but) you captured their interest and attention. David, you are wonderful!
Ossie Edwards
Southwest Community Center Library
An excellent show — skilled, funny, and so wonderfully intertwined with libraries and reading. One of the largest crowds we’ve had for a children’s program. We hope to see you again, soon.
Karl Wasmuth
Hazard Branch Library
Very entertaining. You caught the interest of the audience immediately and kept(it)throughout the show. It was one of the best we’ve ever had and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to other libraries. The turnout was incredible (188 was the head count) and everyone loved it! A number of children got library cards immediately after the show.
Cathy Kretzmer
Vestal Public Library
Fantastic! I have had you three years in a row and thought we might have a small crowd because so many people had seen you but that wasn’t the case at all. Your event brought in the most participants of any program we had. I personally think this was your best show yet!
Genie Dupell
Youth Services Librarian
Fayetteville Free Library
An absolutely wonderful job of creating a program that coordinated with our overall theme. Adults and children were intrigued and enthralled.
Cheryl Ferris
Marcellus Free Library
You showed the audience how magical a library card is and how important books are and many were taken out at the end of your shows. Loved how you were really able to incorporate all the info about library cards, books, library programs and staff. Don’t think I’ve ever seen it done so well before.

Loved it! Much better quality than other shows we’ve presented in the past year. A+ recommendation.

We display books and fliers at every program, but I’ve never before seen the majority of our display books and all of our fliers gone after a program.
Tanya Thompson

Our kids — and adults — are still talking about him! We always get our best turnouts for Moreland. David is totally on top of things — emails and phone confirmations are well in advance of the shows (which are greatly appreciated!!)… press releases are great.

A peerless performer and a persuasive supported of libraries, books, and reading. A prince in fact! More please, Mr. Moreland!

An absolute professional. Well advanced, well executed, and well followed up. If all performers were as well organized, and as professional, programming would be easy indeed.
